Ruby, the ultimate red gem, was long considered the most valuable gemstone. Long associated with passion and courage, ruby is the US birthstone for July and the traditional 15th and 40th anniversary gift.
Regarded as the king of gems by the sages of ancient India, ruby, like sapphire is the tough and durable mineral corundum. The ruby has been prized throughout history is mentioned in the Bible and ancient Sanskrit texts. In India it was believed that the ruby gave its wearer a long life. In Myanmar (Burma) warriors thought rubies made them unconquerable in battle. The fiery crimson color of rubies caused many civilizations to associate them with passion, love and romance. When someone said, “a virtuous woman was more valuable than rubies,” they mentioned what was the most valuable to them. Such is the charm of a ruby!!!
Natural rubies are very rare and valuable in the large sizes. Today a perfect ruby of five carats will fetch at least five times the value of a diamond of the same size and quality, while rubies without flaw or blemish, and of the true pigeon-blood variety, weighing as much as ten carats, are very rare and valuable. For larger rubies, oval and cushion shapes are in the majority. Smaller stones are most often cut in round and square shapes. The best color for rubies is a deep pure vivid red to slightly purplish red.
